Traders in Kiambu County are set to gain from a major infrastructure upgrade after Governor Kimani Wamatangi announced the construction of 29 modern markets across the county.
According to the governor, 26 of the markets are currently under construction, while several have already been completed and handed over for use. The initiative aims to improve working conditions for small-scale traders and stimulate local economic growth.
Speaking during an inspection tour, Wamatangi said the new markets will provide traders with safe and organized spaces, complete with essential amenities such as proper roofing, sanitation, water supply, and electricity. These improvements address long-standing challenges like congestion, poor hygiene, and exposure to harsh weather.
“This programme is about empowering our traders and creating an environment where businesses can thrive,” said Wamatangi, noting that small and medium-sized enterprises form the backbone of the local economy.
The projects are also creating employment opportunities, both during construction and after completion, as more jobs are expected once trading activities ramp up.
Local traders have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the upgraded markets will attract more customers, boost sales, and improve the overall shopping experience.
