Kiambu Governor Wamatangi Keeps 2027 Political Options Open

By Erestinah Jane, July 6, 2026

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has said he will not rush to declare the political party or coalition he will support in the 2027 General Election, insisting that his decision will be guided by his development record, the wishes of Kiambu residents, and the prevailing political environment closer to the polls.

Speaking during a development tour across the county, Wamatangi said his current priority remains delivering on the promises he made to voters rather than engaging in early political realignments.

The governor emphasized that his performance in office will be the foundation of his future political ambitions. He pointed to ongoing investments in healthcare, road infrastructure, water projects, and early childhood education as key indicators that will ultimately determine whether residents renew their confidence in his leadership.

Wamatangi said he believes effective service delivery is more important than early declarations of political allegiance, noting that voters are increasingly judging leaders by tangible results rather than party affiliations.

He also revealed that he intends to consult widely with the people of Kiambu before making any decision on his political future. According to the governor, residents will play a central role in determining the direction he takes as the 2027 elections approach.

The county boss further argued that committing to a political coalition too early could limit his flexibility, saying he prefers to observe how national political alliances evolve before making a final decision.

His remarks come at a time when political activity is intensifying across the Mt. Kenya region, with leaders reassessing their positions amid shifting alliances within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the emergence of new opposition formations ahead of the next General Election.

Political analysts say Wamatangi’s strategy allows him to remain relevant across competing political camps while strengthening his bargaining position through continued development projects and public support.

By delaying his political declaration, the governor joins a growing number of regional leaders who are prioritizing governance while keeping their options open as Kenya’s political landscape continues to evolve ahead of the 2027 elections.
