Festus K. Ng’eno, Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, held a high-level meeting with a senior delegation from FSD Africa, led by CEO Mark Napier, at his Nairobi office. The discussion centered on enhancing cooperation on carbon markets and climate finance, aiming to support Kenya’s climate agenda and strengthen key environmental institutions.
The talks focused on building partnerships to bolster the Climate Change Directorate (CCD) and the Designated National Authority (DNA). PS Ng’eno emphasized the importance of enhancing the CCD’s capacity, noting its central role in implementing Kenya’s climate commitments, including the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP), and greenhouse gas inventory preparations, among other climate initiatives.
Regarding carbon markets, PS Ng’eno highlighted that the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) serves as Kenya’s official Designated National Authority. NEMA oversees and approves carbon market projects, ensuring they align with the country’s sustainable development goals. He stressed the need for robust monitoring, reporting, and verification systems to guarantee transparency, credibility, and effective use of climate funds.
FSD Africa CEO Mark Napier affirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s climate objectives by mobilizing climate finance and encouraging investment in the sector. He noted that strengthened collaboration would enable Kenya to access sustainable funding and emerge as a leader in credible carbon markets across Africa.
The meeting underscores growing cooperation between the Government of Kenya and development finance partners, reinforcing efforts to promote climate action, improve carbon market governance, and drive green economic growth.
