KCB Rugby have tightened their grip on the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit title after edging Kabras Sugar 12-10 in a thrilling main division final at Embu Stadium.
The Bankers produced a disciplined display under pressure to claim the Embu 7s crown and extend their advantage at the top of the overall standings to six points, with only the Christie Sevens remaining before the season champions are crowned.
The final was a tense, low-scoring affair, with both sides relying heavily on defensive organisation and clinical finishing. Vincent Onyala gave KCB an early advantage before Emmanuel Opondo crossed for the Bankers’ second try.
Kabras responded through Michael Lukusi and Griffin Chao to keep the contest within touching distance. However, KCB held their nerve in the closing stages, producing crucial turnovers and denying the Sugar Millers clear opportunities as the clock ran down.
KCB had reached the final after overcoming Daystar Falcons in the semi-finals, having earlier shut out Kenya Harlequin in the quarter-finals. Kabras, meanwhile, booked their place in the decider after battling past Menengai Oilers in a fiercely contested Rai Derby semi-final.
Throughout the tournament, KCB combined pace on the wings with aggressive breakdown work, while Kabras relied on their physical strength and attacking flair. The contrasting styles produced a final that remained finely balanced until the final whistle.
The victory has significantly strengthened KCB’s position in the championship race. The Bankers now have 98 points, six ahead of Kabras on 92, giving them a strong platform heading into the final leg in Nairobi.
KCB will now look to maintain their consistency at the Christie Sevens and secure the overall SportPesa National Sevens Circuit crown, while Kabras face the tougher task of producing an exceptional final tournament and hoping other results go their way.
The Embu final once again underlined the intensity of Kenyan sevens rugby, where small mistakes can determine the outcome of a match and a single possession can change the direction of a championship race.
For KCB, the 12-10 victory was another statement of their consistency and determination throughout the season. For Kabras, the narrow defeat leaves the title race alive heading into the final act in Nairobi.
