The 36th edition of the Driftwood Sevens reached boiling point at Mombasa Sports Club on Sunday morning as the Main Cup quarter-finals delivered a thrilling mix of dominant performances, tight contests and unexpected results in the fourth leg of the 2026 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit.
After a rain-soaked opening day on Saturday, the sun returned over the Coast, but there was little warmth on the pitch as the remaining eight teams battled for places in the semi-finals.
Kabras Sugar continued their impressive campaign with a commanding 27-5 victory over Uganda Emerging 7s, ending the Ugandan side’s hopes of reaching the final. The Kakamega-based outfit controlled the contest and maintained their status as one of the tournament’s leading contenders.
Daystar Falcons also booked their place in the last four after overcoming newly promoted NYS Spades 17-5. Spades had made history by reaching the Main Cup quarter-finals on their Division One debut, but Daystar’s composure and experience proved decisive.
Circuit leaders KCB RFC survived a major test against Nondescripts, edging their opponents 17-14 in a tightly contested encounter. The result keeps KCB’s title defence firmly on course as they continue their pursuit of crucial circuit points.
Menengai Oilers produced one of the morning’s most convincing performances, dismantling Mwamba RFC 31-5 to secure their semi-final ticket. Oilers’ attacking strength once again underlined why they are among the tournament favourites.
The semi-final line-up is now complete, with Kabras Sugar facing Daystar Falcons, while KCB RFC take on Menengai Oilers.
The Kabras-Daystar clash promises to be a battle between a dominant Kabras outfit and a confident university side that has continued to punch above its weight. Meanwhile, KCB and Oilers will lock horns in what could be one of the weekend’s most explosive encounters, with both sides boasting dangerous attacking units.
The Driftwood 7s is also providing plenty of entertainment away from the pitch. Following Bensoul’s Saturday performance, Charisma is scheduled to headline Sunday’s entertainment programme, adding to the vibrant coastal atmosphere surrounding the tournament.
With the semi-finals and final still to come, the race for the Driftwood 7s crown—and valuable SportPesa National Sevens Circuit points—is wide open.
