Legendary English commentator Ian Darke has been entrusted with one of the most prestigious assignments in world football after FOX Sports named him lead commentator for the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Darke, widely regarded as one of the most recognizable voices in the sport, will call the tournament curtain-raiser between co-hosts Mexico and South Africa at the iconic Mexico City Stadium, formerly known as Estadio Azteca. The historic venue will become the first stadium in the world to host matches in three different FIFA World Cups after previously staging games in 1970 and 1986.
FOX Sports has finalized its commentary assignments for the opening week of the expanded 48-team tournament, assembling a roster of seasoned broadcasters and former players to guide audiences through the month-long spectacle spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Darke will be joined in the commentary booth by former United States international Landon Donovan, who will provide analysis for the Group A opener. Alex Aljoe will report from pitchside, bringing viewers closer to the atmosphere inside one of football’s most historic arenas.
The selection of Darke for the opening match underscores his standing as one of the game’s most respected commentators. Over a career spanning several decades, he has covered multiple World Cups, European Championships and some of the biggest matches in club football, earning praise for his memorable calls and distinctive style.
FOX Sports’ primary commentary team of John Strong and former U.S. midfielder Stu Holden will begin their campaign a day later when they call the United States’ opening Group A encounter against Paraguay in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, acclaimed broadcaster Jacqui Oatley will team up with former England defender Warren Barton for the clash between South Korea and Czechia in Guadalajara.
Another experienced pairing, Darren Fletcher and former England goalkeeper Owen Hargreaves, has been assigned Canada’s opening fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, while veteran commentator Derek Rae and former England goalkeeper Rob Green will oversee the meeting between Qatar and Switzerland.
FOX executives have opted for a blend of celebrated broadcasters and former international stars in a bid to enhance coverage of what will be the biggest World Cup in history. The 2026 edition marks the first time the tournament will feature 48 nations, up from the traditional 32-team format.
Spanish-language coverage in the United States will be handled by Telemundo and Peacock. José Luis López Salido and Jorge Calvo will call the opening match alongside former Mexican international Andrés Guardado, who joins the network as an analyst.
One of the most anticipated voices of the tournament, legendary commentator Andrés Cantor, famous worldwide for his trademark prolonged “Gooooal!” celebrations, is scheduled to make his first appearance during the United States’ opening match against Paraguay.
The opening ceremony and inaugural match in Mexico City are expected to attract hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide, ushering in a new era for football’s premier competition as North America hosts the tournament for the first time since 1994.
