Heavy Security Deployment Keeps Embu Calm as Businesses Operate Cautiously During Gen Z Anniversary Demonstrations

Embu Town remained largely calm on Thursday under an unprecedented security operation as police intensified surveillance, erected strategic roadblocks, and conducted extensive patrols to prevent potential unrest during the nationwide Gen Z anniversary demonstrations.

The security measures came as several parts of the country experienced demonstrations to commemorate the June 25, 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests, which left dozens of young Kenyans dead and hundreds injured after demonstrators stormed Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.

In Embu, authorities moved early to secure key government installations, business centers, transport corridors, and public facilities, effectively placing the county headquarters under a precautionary security lockdown.

Embu West Sub-County Police Commander Vincent Kitili confirmed that security agencies had established checkpoints on all major roads leading into the town, including routes connecting Embu to Nairobi, Meru, Kirinyaga, and Tharaka Nithi counties.

According to Kitili, officers were instructed to conduct comprehensive security screenings on motorists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians entering the town to prevent the movement of weapons, stolen goods, or materials that could be used to fuel unrest.

“We have deployed adequate personnel to ensure the safety of residents, businesses, and public institutions. Our objective is to maintain peace and guarantee that those carrying out lawful activities can do so without interference,” he said.

Police officers stationed at the checkpoints conducted manual inspections of vehicles, luggage, and cargo trucks while monitoring suspicious movements around major entry points.

The Eastern Regional Security Committee, led by Regional Commissioner Jacob Ouma, coordinated a multi-agency deployment involving officers from the National Police Service, Administration Police, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and other security units.

The operation focused on protecting critical infrastructure, including government offices, courts, banks, communication facilities, and transport terminals.

Security personnel were also deployed around the Embu County Government headquarters, law courts, Huduma Centre, and major financial institutions as authorities sought to prevent any attempts at vandalism or disruption.

Despite the absence of active demonstrations in the town, business activity slowed considerably as traders adopted a cautious approach amid uncertainty surrounding the nationwide protests.

Several retail shops opened later than usual, while others operated behind partially closed doors. Some supermarket chains increased the number of private security guards at their premises, while wholesalers and electronics dealers closely monitored developments throughout the day.

Business owners cited painful memories of previous demonstrations witnessed in other parts of the country, where traders suffered significant losses through looting, vandalism, and destruction of property.

The Embu Business Owners Association urged members to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to safeguard commercial investments.

Association Chairman Charles Mugambi said traders had organized themselves to monitor business districts and report suspicious activities to security agencies.

“We support peaceful expression of constitutional rights, but we cannot allow criminals to take advantage of the situation to destroy businesses built over many years. Traders have invested heavily in this town and must protect their livelihoods,” Mugambi said.

He noted that many businesses were still recovering from economic challenges brought about by inflation, rising operational costs, and reduced consumer spending.

Public transport services also experienced noticeable disruption despite the absence of direct confrontations.

The Embu Matatu Owners Association reported a sharp decline in passenger numbers as many residents opted to remain at home or postpone non-essential travel.
