The government has established and fully equipped three state-of-the-art film hubs in Nyeri, Bomet and Migori counties as part of efforts to strengthen Kenya’s growing creative economy and create employment opportunities for young people.
Speaking while presenting the 2026/27 national budget in Parliament on Thursday, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi said the facilities have been fitted with modern commercial-grade film production equipment to support filmmakers, digital content creators and audio-visual artists.
One of the centres has been established at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Nyeri County, while the other two are located in Bomet and Migori counties.
Mbadi said the initiative seeks to decentralize film production infrastructure from Nairobi and nurture talent across the country by providing creators with access to professional equipment and production facilities closer to their communities.
He noted that the investment is aimed at unlocking opportunities within the creative industry, often referred to as the “orange economy”, by enabling young people to commercialize their talents and produce content capable of competing on international streaming platforms.
The film hubs form part of the broader KSh4.84 trillion budget for the 2026/27 financial year unveiled before the National Assembly.
Besides supporting the creative sector, the Treasury also highlighted youth-focused initiatives, including the NextGen.Ke programme, a partnership between the government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) designed to promote innovation, technology and employment among young people.
The budget allocated the largest share of government expenditure to the education sector, which received KSh781.4 billion to fund basic education, higher learning institutions and other programmes aimed at expanding access to quality education.
The establishment of the film hubs is expected to boost local content production, create jobs and position Kenya as a regional centre for creative and digital industries.
