Gor Mahia FC stretched their lead at the top of the Kenyan Premier League table after battling to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Mathare United FC in an entertaining SportPesa League clash.
The match looked headed for a tense finish before Gor Mahia showed their champion mentality with a late winner to secure all three points and maintain their impressive unbeaten run.
After a tight first half where both sides struggled to break the deadlock, the game burst into life in the second half.
Gor Mahia broke through in the 67th minute when Ebenezer Assifuah made an instant impact from the bench. The forward unleashed a powerful strike after being set up by Jackson Dwang, sending the K’Ogalo faithful into celebration as the champions took a 1-0 lead.
Mathare United, however, refused to go down without a fight. In the 81st minute, Dennis Okoth silenced the home fans when he found the equalizer to make it 1-1 and briefly put pressure on the league leaders.
But Gor Mahia responded like true title contenders. In the 86th minute, Assifuah was brought down inside the box by the Mathare goalkeeper, earning Gor Mahia a crucial penalty. Midfielder Enock Morrisson stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to restore the lead at 2-1.
The final whistle confirmed another important victory for K’Ogalo, who continue to dominate the title race. Despite conceding late, Gor Mahia’s defense held firm while the midfield controlled key phases of the match and the attack delivered when it mattered most.
The win pushes Gor Mahia nine points clear at the top of the table, strengthening their push to successfully defend the league title.
