Fear and panic gripped residents in Romania early Friday morning after a Russian drone struck an apartment building, sparking a fire and injuring two people in an incident that has intensified security concerns across Eastern Europe.
According to the Romanian defence ministry, the drone slammed into the residential building during the early hours, triggering explosions and flames that forced emergency crews to respond rapidly as frightened residents evacuated the area.
Authorities confirmed that two people sustained injuries during the incident and were rushed for medical treatment. Officials said the victims were receiving care, while emergency responders continued operations at the scene to ensure all residents were safely evacuated from the affected building.
Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours as thick smoke billowed from parts of the apartment complex. Police officers sealed off the area while rescue teams searched through damaged sections of the building to assess the impact of the strike.
Witnesses described terrifying moments as loud blasts shattered the silence before flames erupted from the residential block. Some residents reportedly fled their homes in panic as alarms sounded and emergency vehicles rushed to the scene.
The Romanian government strongly condemned the incident and immediately launched investigations into how the drone entered Romanian territory and struck the apartment building.
Defence officials are now working to determine whether the aircraft deliberately crossed into Romanian airspace or whether it was linked to ongoing military operations connected to the conflict involving Russia in the region.
The incident has raised fresh alarm within North Atlantic Treaty Organization, of which Romania is a member, amid growing fears over the increasing risks posed by drone incursions and airspace violations near the alliance’s eastern borders.
Security experts warn that continued military activity near neighboring countries could heighten the danger of accidental or intentional cross-border incidents capable of escalating regional tensions.
Romania has in recent months reinforced surveillance systems, border monitoring, and emergency preparedness measures following several reported cases involving drones and debris believed to be linked to the ongoing regional conflict.
The latest incident is expected to intensify diplomatic and military discussions among NATO allies regarding civilian safety, regional defence coordination, and protection of member states situated near conflict zones.
Investigations into the drone strike were still ongoing Friday morning, with authorities expected to provide further updates as assessment teams continue examining the damage and tracing the drone’s origin and flight path.
