A major fire swept through Bondo Junction in Siaya Town early Saturday morning, leaving dozens of traders facing huge losses after shops, kiosks and workshops were razed.
Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out at around 4:00 a.m., spreading quickly across the busy commercial area before residents could bring it under control. Several businesses were destroyed, including furniture workshops, entertainment spots and retail outlets, leaving behind debris and burnt remains.
Business owners described the incident as a serious blow to their livelihoods. Stephen Ochieng, who runs a carpentry workshop, said his tools and furniture stock — including beds and chairs worth tens of thousands of shillings — were completely destroyed.
“This fire tragedy has contributed to my downfall,” Ochieng said, adding that rebuilding after years of hard work will be extremely difficult.
No casualties were reported, but residents said the Siaya County Fire and Rescue Service failed to respond in time due to mechanical problems with firefighting equipment. The delay allowed the fire to spread further, drawing criticism from the affected traders.
Following the incident, traders appealed for assistance from leaders, including Samuel Atandi and James Orengo, calling for support to help revive businesses and restore livelihoods disrupted by the fire.
