Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen has reassured fans that he is recovering well after suffering a fresh cardiac scare during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine, an incident that forced the match to be abandoned and reignited debate over the future of his playing career.

The 34-year-old VfL Wolfsburg midfielder collapsed in the 65th minute of the match played in Odense on Sunday, June 7, after appearing to clutch his chest while off the ball. Medical personnel immediately rushed onto the pitch as shocked teammates and supporters watched anxiously.

Unlike the dramatic cardiac arrest he suffered during Euro 2020, Eriksen’s Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD), which was implanted following that life-threatening episode, automatically delivered an electric shock that restored his heart rhythm within seconds.

The Danish international regained consciousness almost immediately and was able to leave the pitch on foot before being taken to Odense University Hospital for observation. Medical officials later confirmed that he was in stable condition.

In a statement released on June 8, Eriksen thanked supporters for their messages and confirmed that he had been discharged from hospital and would take some time away from football to spend with his family.

“I want to thank everyone for the love and support. I am doing well and looking forward to spending some time with my family. I appreciate all the messages and concern,” Eriksen said.

The latest incident has once again brought back memories of June 2021, when the former Manchester United and Inter Milan midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland. That incident shocked the football world and led to the installation of the ICD device that has since allowed him to continue his professional career.

Following months of rehabilitation, Eriksen remarkably returned to competitive football, first with Brentford in the English Premier League before later joining Manchester United. He subsequently moved to German side VfL Wolfsburg, where he has continued to feature regularly.

Sunday’s collapse, however, has triggered renewed discussions within the football community regarding his long-term future in the game. Fans, former players and medical experts have expressed concern on social media, with some urging the veteran midfielder to consider retirement to safeguard his health.

Denmark’s football federation suspended the remainder of the friendly against Ukraine following the incident, with players from both teams visibly shaken by the scenes.

No official decision has been made regarding Eriksen’s playing future, and doctors are expected to conduct further assessments before determining when, or if, he can return to competitive action.

Despite the fresh scare, the midfielder’s swift recovery and ability to walk off the pitch unaided offered reassurance to millions of football fans around the world, many of whom remembered the traumatic scenes witnessed five years ago during Euro 2020.
