Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested Embakasi East Member of County Assembly (MCA) Patrick Karani together with two other suspects after officers recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during an operation conducted in Nairobi.
According to the DCI, the three were arrested at Karani’s office located in the Roasters area along Thika Road following investigations that led detectives to the premises.
During the operation, officers recovered a Glock pistol loaded with a magazine containing 12 rounds of 9mm live ammunition. Preliminary investigations established that the firearm was being held without a valid civilian firearm licence.
The DCI identified the two other suspects arrested alongside the MCA as Stephen Kimathi Karimoni and Stanley Njogu Irungu.
Investigators said the three are currently in police custody as detectives complete investigations and prepare the necessary documents for their arraignment in court.
Authorities indicated that the suspects are expected to face charges related to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition under the Firearms Act.
The agency said ballistic and regulatory checks carried out after the recovery confirmed that the weapon had not been licensed for civilian use, prompting the arrests.
In a statement, the DCI reiterated its commitment to enforcing the country’s firearms laws, warning that illegal possession of guns poses a serious threat to public safety and national security.
The investigative agency further cautioned members of the public against possessing firearms without authorization, saying anyone found violating the law would face prosecution.
The latest arrests come amid heightened security operations by law enforcement agencies targeting illegal firearms and criminal networks operating in different parts of the country.
Detectives said investigations are ongoing and have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests as they seek to establish the source of the recovered weapon and whether it may have been linked to other criminal activities.
The suspects are expected to be presented before court once investigations are concluded.
