The Africa University Public Relations Challenge (AUPRC) has recorded significant growth ahead of its 2026 edition, expanding from just four participating institutions last year to eleven universities from Kenya in what organizers describe as a major milestone for strategic communication education on the continent.
The competition, whose expansion was reported by The Star Kenya, reflects the increasing interest among universities in equipping students with practical skills in public relations, corporate communications, crisis management and reputation building.
The 2026 edition will be hosted by the United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) at its Nairobi campus, where students from leading universities will compete in a one-day grand finale scheduled for August 25, 2026.
The participating Kenyan universities are USIU-Africa, the University of Nairobi, Strathmore University, Moi University, Daystar University, Kenyatta University, Riara University, Mount Kenya University (MKU), Zetech University, KCA University, Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU), and St. Paul’s University. The competition will also feature universities from other African countries, including the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, giving the event a broader continental dimension.
This year’s challenge will require student teams comprising three to five members to develop and present a comprehensive public relations strategy for a fictional energy startup seeking to navigate corporate accountability challenges while expanding across multiple African markets.
Participants will be expected to demonstrate expertise in crisis communication, stakeholder engagement, media relations, brand positioning, sustainability messaging, digital communications, investor confidence strategies and cross-border corporate reputation management. Judges will assess not only the creativity of the proposed campaigns but also their practicality, strategic thinking, research quality and ability to respond to real-world communication challenges.
Before reaching the live finale, universities must submit their initial competition entries by July 15, 2026. Shortlisted teams will then earn the opportunity to pitch their proposals before a panel of communication professionals, corporate executives and industry leaders during the final event in Nairobi.
The stakes are high for the competing students. The winning team will receive a $10,000 cash prize, while participants will also compete for valuable industry mentorship opportunities, executive internships and exposure to leading communication professionals from across Africa.
Organizers say the competition is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the demands of the modern communications industry by exposing students to realistic corporate scenarios that require analytical thinking, teamwork and innovative problem-solving.
The AUPRC has increasingly become a platform for identifying emerging communication talent, with previous participants securing internships and employment opportunities in public relations agencies, multinational corporations, government institutions and international organizations after showcasing their skills during the challenge.
The 2026 edition will also serve as the official curtain-raiser for the Africa Global Public Relations Week (AGPRW) 2026, which will be held in Nairobi later the same week. The conference is expected to bring together communication experts, policymakers, academics and corporate leaders from across Africa to discuss the future of public relations and strategic communication on the continent.
This year’s AGPRW will focus on strengthening African storytelling, enhancing the continent’s global image and exploring how African organizations can better shape their own narratives in an increasingly competitive digital media environment.
The rapid expansion of the university challenge from four institutions to eleven Kenyan universities within a year underscores the growing recognition of strategic communication as a critical professional discipline. As organizations increasingly prioritize reputation management, stakeholder engagement and digital communications, universities are responding by giving students more opportunities to test their knowledge in competitive, real-world environments.
With a larger field of competitors, stronger continental participation and closer integration with one of Africa’s premier public relations conferences, the 2026 Africa University Public Relations Challenge is expected to be its biggest and most competitive edition yet.
