French international referee François Letexier has become the subject of a viral social media campaign after a Yemeni coffee shop in California jokingly announced that he had been “banned for life” from its premises following Egypt’s controversial 3-2 defeat to Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The symbolic ban was announced by Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co. in Laguna Hills, California, where hundreds of Egyptian football supporters had gathered to watch the Round of 16 encounter. The café shared the humorous post on its official Instagram account as a show of solidarity with disappointed fans following Egypt’s elimination from the tournament.
The viral graphic declared: “BREAKING: Referee François Letexier has officially been banned from Qamaria Laguna Hills. Reason: That officiating.”
The lighthearted gesture quickly gained traction across social media, with football fans widely sharing the post and praising the café’s sense of humor amid the disappointment surrounding the match.
Qamaria’s Laguna Hills outlet had only recently celebrated its grand opening on July 2, 2026, making the World Cup screening one of its first major community events. The venue attracted a large turnout from the local Egyptian and broader Arab diaspora, many of whom watched the dramatic knockout match together.
Other Qamaria branches, including outlets in Tampa and New Orleans, later joined the online trend by reposting and amplifying the symbolic “ban,” helping the campaign reach thousands of football fans worldwide.
The social media stunt followed widespread criticism of Letexier’s officiating during the Round of 16 clash between Egypt and defending champions Argentina.
Egyptian supporters and football officials questioned several key decisions made during the match, including the disallowing of what would have been Egypt’s second goal and the rejection of penalty appeals after forward Mohamed Salah appeared to have his shirt pulled by Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister inside the penalty area.
The controversy extended beyond social media, with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) lodging a formal protest with FIFA over the referee’s performance.
The federation has called for an independent review of the officiating, arguing that there were inconsistencies in disciplinary decisions and the application of the Laws of the Game during the highly charged encounter.
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has also publicly criticized the officiating and urged FIFA to investigate the refereeing crew assigned to the match.
The EFA has reportedly requested that Letexier and his officiating team not be appointed to any remaining fixtures at the 2026 FIFA World Cup pending the outcome of its complaint.
Meanwhile, the online backlash against the French referee intensified in the hours following the final whistle, with thousands of football fans flooding his social media pages with critical comments.
The volume of reactions reportedly prompted Letexier to disable comments on his personal Instagram account as the debate over the officiating continued to dominate football discussions online.
Although the café’s “lifetime ban” carries no official sporting significance, it has become one of the most widely shared fan reactions to Egypt’s controversial World Cup exit, reflecting the passion of Egyptian supporters and the global attention generated by one of the tournament’s most debated knockout matches.
FIFA had not publicly commented on Egypt’s formal complaint or the calls for disciplinary action against the officiating team by the time of publication.
