A suspected Ukrainian drone strike has killed seven people and injured 11 others after hitting a long-distance civilian passenger bus travelling through the Russian-occupied Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, in one of the latest and most severe incidents involving civilian transport in the ongoing conflict.
According to Denis Pushilin, the Kremlin-installed head of the region, the attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday in the town of Yenakiieve when a drone struck a civilian coach operating a long-distance route between Moscow and Simferopol in Crimea. Authorities said all seven people killed were civilians, while the injured passengers were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Images circulated by Russian state media showed the bus completely burned out along the roadside following the strike.
The incident has further intensified already heightened tensions amid a surge in cross-border drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides reporting large-scale aerial attacks targeting military and infrastructure sites deep within each other’s territories.
Russian defence authorities claimed that more than 350 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight across multiple regions, including at least 50 over the Leningrad region near St. Petersburg. The wave of drone activity coincided with the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where reports indicated explosions and smoke plumes near parts of the city’s port area.
The escalation comes less than 24 hours after Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities reportedly killed at least 23 people and left 138 others injured, according to Ukrainian emergency services.
The Russian State Investigative Committee has launched a formal criminal inquiry into the Donetsk bus attack, classifying it as a terrorist act. Officials in Moscow condemned the strike and vowed to pursue those responsible, while emergency services continued operations to assist victims and secure the area.
Ukrainian authorities have not yet issued an official response regarding the incident or the allegations linking the attack to Ukrainian drone operations.
The latest developments underscore the intensifying nature of aerial warfare in the conflict, with drones increasingly playing a central role in long-range strikes, counterattacks and air defence operations on both sides. The growing frequency of such incidents has raised concerns over the safety of civilian infrastructure and transport routes in contested and occupied regions.
As investigations continue, the Donetsk incident is expected to further inflame diplomatic tensions and contribute to an already volatile security situation marked by repeated cycles of retaliatory strikes and escalating military operations across the region.
