KISII, KENYA — Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Migos Ogamba has challenged technical institutions to play a leading role in Kenya’s economic transformation by equipping learners with practical, innovation-driven skills.

Speaking during the 6th Graduation Ceremony of Kisii National Polytechnic, the CS presided over the graduation of 4,213 students who were awarded diplomas and certificates across various technical and vocational disciplines.

Ogamba emphasized that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) remains central to the government’s strategy of addressing youth unemployment and closing the skills gap in the labour market.

“The government is committed to fostering an environment where innovation thrives. These graduands are the engine that will drive our economic transformation,” he said.

The CS noted that graduates from technical institutions are increasingly becoming key contributors to industrial growth, particularly as the country shifts focus toward manufacturing, digital innovation, and skilled trades.

The ceremony was also attended by Kisii County Deputy Governor Elijah Obebo, who highlighted the importance of collaboration between national and county governments in strengthening vocational training.

Obebo said the county administration is keen on absorbing skilled graduates from local institutions to support grassroots development projects and boost the local manufacturing sector.

The graduation comes amid ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Education to modernize TVET institutions nationwide, with a focus on upgrading infrastructure, integrating technology, and aligning training programs with global industry standards.
