CS Geoffrey Ruku Defends Call for Independent Mt Kenya East Political Identity

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has defended his proposal for the Mt Kenya East region to chart an independent political path, saying the move is aimed at securing equitable development and fair representation rather than creating divisions within the larger Mt Kenya region.

Speaking during a church service at AIPCK Church Gituamba in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Ruku said every region in Kenya has unique economic, social and political priorities that should be acknowledged in national decision-making.

He argued that communities should be free to make political choices based on their development needs instead of being viewed as part of a monolithic voting bloc.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, Mt Kenya East—which comprises Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga and parts of Isiolo counties—has for decades supported national leaders from the wider Mt Kenya region but has not received a proportionate share of government development projects and national appointments.

Ruku claimed the region has often been treated as a political ally during election periods but sidelined once governments are formed, leaving many residents feeling marginalized despite their consistent electoral support.

He said the time had come for leaders from the area to articulate their own agenda and negotiate for development based on the region’s priorities, including infrastructure, agriculture, education, water projects and employment opportunities.

The Cabinet Secretary maintained that advocating for a distinct political identity does not amount to rejecting the larger Mt Kenya community but is instead an effort to ensure all constituent regions receive equitable treatment under the Constitution.
