President Denis Sassou Nguesso has announced that the Republic of the Congo will abolish visa requirements for all African nationals beginning January 1, 2027, in a move aimed at promoting continental integration and boosting economic cooperation across Africa.

The announcement was made during the African Development Bank Group Annual Meetings in Brazzaville as leaders and delegates gathered to mark Africa Day and discuss the continent’s development agenda.

Under the new policy, citizens of all African countries holding valid passports will be allowed to enter Congo-Brazzaville without obtaining a visa, making the Central African nation one of the latest countries to embrace the growing push for unrestricted movement across the continent.

President Sassou Nguesso said the decision is intended to strengthen African unity, remove barriers to mobility and support the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to create a single market for goods and services across Africa.

He argued that greater freedom of movement is essential to unlocking economic opportunities and fostering closer ties among African nations, while calling for a reduction in what he described as barriers created by nationalism and restrictive border policies.

The Congolese leader also voiced support for the eventual adoption of a unified African passport, a long-standing aspiration of the African Union aimed at facilitating easier travel, trade and investment across the continent.

The announcement places Congo-Brazzaville among a growing number of African countries that have adopted visa-free or open-border policies for fellow Africans. Countries such as Togo, Rwanda, Benin, The Gambia, Ghana and Kenya have introduced measures designed to ease travel restrictions and encourage greater regional integration.

Supporters of the policy say easier movement of people will stimulate tourism, increase intra-African trade, attract investment and accelerate the realization of AfCFTA objectives. Business leaders have long argued that visa restrictions remain one of the major obstacles to economic integration on the continent.

Congolese immigration and security authorities are expected to spend the coming months developing the administrative framework for the new system, including regulations governing the duration of stay and other entry requirements ahead of its implementation in January 2027.

The decision is being viewed as a significant contribution to the broader “Borderless Africa” movement, which seeks to make travel within the continent easier for African citizens while strengthening economic and social ties among member states.

If successfully implemented, the visa waiver could further accelerate momentum toward greater continental mobility and reinforce calls for a more integrated Africa driven by trade, investment and people-to-people connections.
