Chelsea suffered a frustrating 1–1 home draw against Burnley FC on February 21, 2026, once again exposing a season-long weakness: an inability to protect leads.
Despite taking an early advantage through João Pedro, Chelsea failed to see the game out. A 72nd-minute red card for Wesley Fofana shifted momentum, allowing Burnley to capitalise deep into stoppage time when Zian Flemming headed home the equaliser.
It was the second consecutive home match in which Chelsea conceded late after leading — a recurring theme that has defined their campaign. The draw means Chelsea have now dropped 17 points from winning positions at home alone, more than any other side in the Premier League.
Across the season, Chelsea have surrendered 19 points from winning positions, a tally bettered only by West Ham United. Defensive lapses and poor game management have consistently undermined otherwise positive performances, even as the team continues to score freely under head coach Liam Rosenior.
Speaking after the match, Rosenior was blunt in his assessment: “We need to kill games off.”
With top-four rivals closing in and the race for European qualification tightening, Chelsea know that unless they learn to protect leads, costly collapses like this could define their season.
