MADRID/LISBON — The UEFA Champions League quarter-finals kicked off with drama on Tuesday night as Arsenal and Bayern Munich secured crucial first-leg advantages on the road.
At the Santiago Bernabéu, Bayern Munich stunned hosts Real Madrid with a 2-1 victory. Luis Díaz opened the scoring in the 41st minute, and Harry Kane doubled the lead shortly after halftime. Kylian Mbappé pulled one back for Madrid in the 74th minute, but the Spanish side now face a tough task in the return leg.
In Lisbon, Arsenal claimed a late 1-0 win over Sporting CP at the Estádio José Alvalade. Kai Havertz struck in the 91st minute to secure the victory, giving Mikel Arteta’s side a slender but important lead heading back to London.
