AMPATH Kenya has launched a new initiative, the Integrated Model for Access, Retention and Advanced Breast Cancer Care, aimed at improving access to quality breast cancer services and ensuring patients receive timely and effective treatment nationwide.

The programme was unveiled at Afya House, where the AMPATH team presented a three-year plan to the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga. The project seeks to reduce the impact of breast cancer in Kenya by enhancing care at every stage—from prevention and early detection to treatment, follow-up, and long-term support.

Key components of the programme include raising public awareness on breast cancer, promoting early prevention, and training healthcare workers to strengthen service delivery. The initiative will also streamline patient support and referral systems, making it easier for patients to access early diagnosis and proper treatment.

Additionally, the project will focus on improving the organization and monitoring of cancer care services, collecting crucial data to inform national health policies and treatment guidelines. Its primary goals are to reduce late-stage diagnoses, improve patient retention in care, and increase survival rates across the country.

Dr. Ouma Oluga emphasized a community-focused approach that places patients at the center of care. He encouraged the use of digital tools to track challenges such as long travel distances and financial barriers, and stressed the importance of empowering citizens to engage in health advocacy and awareness efforts.
