Religious leaders in Mombasa County have called on young people to embrace the teachings of the Qur’an as a key pillar in shaping positive behaviour and strengthening moral values within society.

The call was made during the second Qur’an memorization competition held in Nyali Constituency, organised in partnership with the Elkana Jacob Foundation. Speaking at the event, Ustadh Athuman Abdallah raised concern over the increasing number of youths engaging in criminal activities, a situation he said has instilled fear and anxiety among community members.

He emphasised that nurturing young people spiritually through Qur’anic teachings is a vital step in steering them away from negative influences, while instilling discipline, good morals and a strong sense of responsibility.

The religious leaders noted that the Qur’an memorization competition aims to uplift young people morally, strengthen their religious foundation and contribute to building a peaceful, disciplined and united society.

On his part, political activist and security expert Elkana Jacob said the competition also serves as a platform to encourage youths to recognise the importance of moral values and their role in community development.

Jacob further urged young people to develop self-awareness, warning that drug abuse remains a major challenge that continues to mislead and negatively influence many youths in the county.
