Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) is playing a critical role in advancing national food security by expanding access to affordable credit for farmers.

Speaking in Karen, Nairobi, on Thursday, Kindiki noted that improved access to financing is enabling farmers to scale up food production, a key pillar in the government’s strategy to transform the agricultural sector and ensure sustainable food supplies.

The Deputy President said he held a consultative meeting with the AFC leadership, led by Board Chairman John Mruttu, where he was briefed on ongoing and planned interventions aimed at supporting farmers across the country.

“AFC is providing much-needed credit to farmers to help them increase productivity, adopt modern farming practices, and contribute to food security for our nation,” Kindiki said.

He added that the government remains committed to strengthening institutions that support agriculture, noting that affordable financing, coupled with policy reforms and value-chain development, is essential for transforming the sector into a key driver of economic growth and livelihoods.

Kindiki commended the AFC management for their efforts, saying the corporation’s initiatives align with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which prioritizes empowering farmers and rural communities through access to capital and markets.

The meeting focused on strategies to enhance AFC’s reach, improve loan products, and ensure that more farmers—especially smallholders—can benefit from tailored financial solutions to boost agricultural productivity.
